Bobcat Family
This is perhaps the most unusual photo I have ever taken....actually, it just plain is the rarest moment I have ever seen in the woods. Libby found a winter den of bobcats Winter of 2019. We worked this den every day rain or snow from late January thru March to get this shot. Male bobcats show up for mating the first week of March. (Hoping for it) the big male in the middle of the shot came in for one day only and the 2 kittens on the right are most likely his. The Mother is on the left. Getting a Mom and her kits in one shot is hard enough....but to capture all four of them is a tall task. That’s what makes this such a rare image.
Momma bobcat factoid: Momma is not only responsible for raising her kits each year but somehow she has to disperse them out of her territory (her food source) so she can feed two more (or three) and then disperse them somewhere different than the others....on and on.
